AI in Cybersecurity
Growing up as an ardent reader of both fiction and nonfiction books, most especially those with sci-fi and interstellar themes, the concept of AI wasn't entirely fresh to me. I've always loved how the little data friend seems to always be helpful to our dear protagonist; from delivering cheats to using its computational power in analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of our protagonist and his or her enemies in order to create a detailed battle plan. Not that we need AI to fight any existing battles now though, but these data friends have always been either depicted as being helpful or being the main villains of our stories.
AI (Artificial intelligence) in cybersecurity, has been a form of assistance and improvement by helping organizations monitor, analyze and respond to threats in real time by creating new tools, but this doesn't also change the fact that specific AI threats targeting AI platforms have also emerged due to the AI revolution; and cyber-attacks have grown more sophisticated.
Welcome to another edition of our weekly Techsafe cyber security awareness blog where we share security tips, create awareness on the advantages of digital hygiene and how to go about it. For this week, we'll be touring the AI world and how it affects our cyberspace.
AI’s role in Cybersecurity
Artificial intelligence can analyze large amounts of data, including network traffic, monitoring the system logs in order to identify potential threats. This mainly helps in detecting and preventing cyber-attacks. AI can also analyze payment patterns and behaviors of a user in order to identify and prevent financial losses due to scam or unauthorized activities. These and a lot more highlight the assistance and ease, AI gives in Cybersecurity.
As the use of AI continues to be adopted in cybersecurity by organizations in aiding their security detection, and defense systems, the same can be said for cyber attackers and hackers. These set of people have also learnt to adopt AI use in launching more sophisticated attacks; but these can be countered using measures such as AI powered firewalls and intrusion detection systems which can detect threats in real time and also learn from past attacks and adapt.
Although the use of AI as aid might seem more encouraging, it is advised to create security strategies that combine it with human expertise as depending on just AI can lead to certain challenges. This brings us to the end of today's blog; in a technologically advanced era, awareness is never too much, and you ever intend to join a cybersecurity community of likeminded individuals, check out Techsafe.
